Dave,

Yes, checking the mag switch was always a proceedure for me...this assures

that the mag switch is working properly...as to grounding the mags. ( of 
course the switch could fail at the time of cherck --but not likely). SO:

Always ASSUME that the prop/Mags are Hot... that the engine might fire.  
Never move the prop without expecting it to fire! 

I did have my mag switch fail on my coupe...loose wires on switch ---
which 
sure surprised me. When I landed and turned off the switch, the engine
kept 
running! Sure made a beleiver out of me.
