Okay I brought this up: Replying to Larry's post:
>First, cheap steel?
Even if the bolts can be had for $1.00 +-$100. the
point with my post is: If I've got my plane down and
one bolt is holding up the assembly, the cost is much
greater than the cost of a bolt.
I would say everyone has a box of bolts in the hanger,
somewhere. If I have a bolt without the hole, (but
with the cute "X" on top), I have two "quick" options.
Drill a hole or put on a nylon lock nut. (That was
why I ask, I didn't know if nylon lock nuts where
"Acceptable" replacements for cotter pin bolts).
>Second, if you use a drill press, and secure the bolt,
>there is no reason you can't put that hole right down the
>center of the pike.
I drilled the hole. Put the system back together
and the A&P said No No. I ask "Why". He said the
factory puts those holes in. I said "How". He said
they drill them. I said "So, Isn't that what I did".
His rate per hour when up and he quit talking to me. <g>
>Third, the true nature of plating is that you can plate the
>outside of an object, but the plating won't go down into the
>inside of a hole or cavity.
I guess plating is the issue. So I won't do the drilling
any more. I'll replace the two bolts that are now deep in
the belly of my coupe. I'll use nylon lock nuts.
But: (I HAVE seen A&P's drill the heads of bolts for safety
wire).
Next point: When working with some folks:
"Speak only when spoken to and offer no information".
