After reading about the Ercoupe burning during
start up I have decided to once again try to
tackle the gas smell in my coupe. If anyone has
had the experience of a strong gas smell that is
intermittent and has found a cure for it I would
like to know. The symptoms in my plane are as
follows. I can let the plane sit for days with no
smell inside at all and then come back the next
day and the interior will smell so bad I am afraid
a spark could set the thing off. I replaced my
fuel valve which was leaking but this cured the
smell for only a short time. I can find no
visible leaks or wet spots on any of the tanks at
any time. The carburetor does not leak and I can
find no leaks in any of the visible fuel lines or
hoses. There is no staining or residue on any of
the visible fuel system parts, but yet the strong
gas odor persists. Is there a hidden spot where
leaks form that I can't see? I realize some gas
odor is common with old planes but this smells
like someone poured a quart of fuel into the
cockpit. Any help would be appreciated.
