I finally found the fuel smell that has been plaguing me since I bought one-seven-hotel. Turned out the outlet flange in the left tank (the flange
that is riveted to facilitate the fitting) had 3 rivets rotten and broken
off. The fuel leaked only as the aircraft was moved, so my guess is the
flange had to be buckling a little with motion. The fix wasn't too hard
being
that the left tank has the fuel gauge directly above it. The Cessna guys
do
have it made in this respect... one piece formed tanks.
I have a belly strobe on my coupe, like many others I've seen.
If
the leak were big enough and gravity was in charge (it is!) fuel could
easily
make it to the power supply. Food for thought.
