I've successfully broken in two engines with steel barrels.
The shop that rebuilt my engine test ran it for about 15
minutes on a stand to ensure everything stayed together and
temperatures and pressures were proper. The trick after that
is to keep as high a manifold pressure as possible for the
few hours needed for break-in. That means low altitude full
throttle operation - in a coupe, it also means use a cruise
prop so you can run full throttle. I basically stayed over
flat territory near airports, just in case something let go.
Even approaches should be made flat with power.

Ten hours and change the mineral oil and filter to single
weight ashless dispersant oil - continue with the hard
running for at least another ten hours. Don't be surprised
if there is some metal in the oil with the first change, but
only someone who's seen it before can really tell you if
what you see is too much.

After about twenty hours, you can return to normal
operation. With O-470s I got 10 hours per quart consumption
and long life using the above procedure, which was what was
recommended by both the rebuilder and my mechanic.
