That is end play of the crank shaft. Yes, it is there for a reason. The 
thunk is the shoulder of the shaft p on the thrust bearing. Depending on
your 
engine the thrust bear can be a U shaped main bearing or a flat set of
brass 
flanges set on dowel pins.
