Had an opportunity to try the GPS with S.A. turned off on a cross country yesterday. I went up to Arlington and met up with Andy 2417H. We flew as a flight of two to Hoquiam, then up the coast and return. Altogether I put close to 4 hours on 2273H. Practically speaking, I could see no difference in the GPS function with S.A. off versus S.A. on. I have a Skymap IIIC.
I guess if you were trying to taxi in 0-0 conditions it might keep you from chewing up a hanger with your propellor. However for airplanes in flight I don't see any difference. Cars or boats, now that might make a real difference.
