I'm reasonably certain that in a former life I was a blond. A couple of
weeks ago, I changed my oil. I knew that there was a screen/filter in
that engine somewhere, but I couldn't find it. You folks kindly
informed me that it was under the big nut at the rear of the engine
that the oil temp sender is hooked to. Today, while doing my
pre-flight check, I noticed this big white spin on canister attached to
the left side of the engine. It looks suspiciously like a spin on oil
filter. Safety wired in place and everything If as I strongly suspect,
it turns out to be the elusive oil filter, does that mean that the one
under the big nut at the rear of the engine does not need to be
serviced? Or, better still, does it mean that the one in the engine can
be removed? Next question: Did any of the Coupes come with the spin on
filter standard? Or, was it always an add-on option? It seems that the
spin-on unit is so much more handy that they would all have them.
On a more personal note, I cleared the major hurdle in owning a
small sport aircraft today. I took the wife flying. As I hadn't been
up for near 20 years, she has been hesitant to fly until I could prove
myself competent. I've put about 30 hours on since last fall, and taken
all three kids flying. They all lived to tell about it. So, today she
agreed to go along. We flew out of Provo, and headed south. Se spent
two hours flying over the central Utah valleys and mountains. The only
white knuckle time she had was while landing again at Provo. The place
can be a zoo on a Saturday afternoon. We had two planes ahead of us in
the pattern, and another coming up behind. While on final, two planes
came onto the runway and took off in front of us as a flight of two.
Dumb shits must not have had a radio, or they had a death wish. Luckily
they kicked it in the butt, and got out of the way while I was deciding
to do an aborted landing. Then greased her in, and mamma's happy. And,
when mamma's happy, everybody's happy.

Good flying,

Larry
