If you have the screen, you need to service it regularly (like every oil change) so that you can find the metal shavings before the engine self destructs. If you have a filter, you need to cut it open and inspect the media for the same thing, and the same reason. If you have both, you need to inspect both. The oil filter is an STC item. If it's on the left side of the case (pilot's side) where the bypass for the (optional) oil cooler usually is, then the STC holder is probably El Reno. Look in your logs for the (required) paperwork. I believe the STC allows for removing the screen, but I'd leave it in. Belt and suspenders, you know. Familiarize yourself with your engine, airframe, logs, and accepted methods and procedures.
