I don't know if you know about this but Transport Canada
has recently approved a plan to allow for full owner
maintenance of some older aircraft including coups.

I am in the process of switching over once I get my exhaust
system back together.

It means I am moving my plane into the "experimental" category, and
will be able to modify it at will, and do my own maintenance and
inspections. The category is not reversable, however, so it is a
one-way move unless you want to re-certify everything.

It is one solution to the problem, and obviously not for everyone.
And should not be done without some serious thought. But for those
who want to go that way, and of course those who have the experience to
take on the job, it is a way to go.
