GPS altitude readouts are typically pretty inaccurate.  Under ideal 
conditions, it can be accurate, byt typically it is not.  Get your
altimeter 
checked.  Should be part of the bi-annual transponder encoder check,
anyhow.  
If it ain't accurate to within at least 200 ft, it ain't legal for VFR,
and 
it is a required instrument.
