Hi John,
 A rule of thumb, now that we have dispensed with selective activation, is

that the accuracy of altitude will continue to be 6 times more innacurate 
than that of position. A whole lot better than before, but the factor of 6

was in effect then too. 
No one should rely on gps altitude. You are so correct.... get a current 
altimeter setting. When we get to using WAAS, then the accuracy will be
much 
better, and when we finally get LAAS up and running you will have accuracy
in 
the millimeters.
But dont hold youi breath. These things take a lot of time.   I talk to
the  
head guys in Washington all the time, and THEY don't even know when this
is 
all going to come about.
