Anyone flying out there? I hadn't gone up in over a month. Hadn't
even started her up. Shame one me. So Saturday I decided to go up. My
neighbor happened to be in his front yard as I left the house, so I
decided to take him up with me. Brave man this neighbor. Anyway, It
was headed for 100 degrees this day. We hit the airport, did the
preflight, and hit the starter. With the exception that it took a
couple of extra squirts of prime, and a few anxious moments guessing if
it'd fire before the battery died, she fired and as usual ran like a
top. We had a discussion on static RPM the other day, so I decided to
see what my C-85 would do. 2200 RPM. Like I said, it was hot. We took
off and headed west on a gentle 90 mph climb. After about 2500 ft, at
full throttle and a little leaning, the oil temp approached the 212
degree mark. The first time she's ever got up that warm. I had to cut
back to 2100 rpm and go full rich to get her back to 190 f. I know
we've had this discussion about oil temp, but this was the first time I
went out with ground temp approaching 100 degrees. So, my question.
I've heard the reports that oil temp should be approx 100 degrees over
air temp. But, is that keeping her at full throttle, or is that backed
out a little? Those of you that don't overheat, can you get your temps
up if you keep the "pedal to the metal?" Second question: I'm still
running Shell 80. Will changing to 100 help in the oil temp
department? I'm going to change anyway, but I'm curious about the temp.
