Congratulations on a good choice. The more I fly Ercoupes, the more I
dislike
the way Skyshlocks fly.

One thing to remember, however, is that the 172 will forgive something an
Ercoupe will not. That is, get slow down final, and the 172 will just
shorten
its landing roll and make you look like a genius.

In an Ercoupe, an alarming sink rate will develop and you'll smack the
runway
or the cornfield in front of it.

So be very conscious of your airspeed, especially given that the Ercoupe
is
content with a 10MPH more than the 172 wants.

Also, learn to recognize what developing sink looks like... ...if you've
been
flying a 172 it's quite possible that you've not been trained to recognize
the
tell-tale signs of an airplane that is on pitch but below airspeed and
starting
to sink. Get to know the speeds (both power on and power off) that the
sink starts to develop at, and learn how to avoid it when necessary and to
use it in place of flaps and slips when necessary.

Go out and practice some dead-stick landings as well. You'll find that the
'Coupe wants you to turn towards the runway a lot sooner than the 172,
but is easier to get down. Just don't try and 'stretch' the glide!
