Glen, not knowing how the aircraft is wired, this can only be a crap shoot.  But, being an old electrician, I do know that if the load exceeds the wire's capacity, virtually everything downstream will fade.  Thus, you turn on the landing lights, they go on, but are only say 80% as bright as they should be.  At this same time, the radio would also only have 80% of the required power to run at maximum efficiency.  Thus, I'd suspect that somewhere in the system, there's a wire that's undersized.  Once the lights are turned off, the radio will once again have full power.

That is what I thought, but it sure does fade!

What would make the radio fade?  Even though turning on the landing lights could exceed the generator output, the battery should more than take up the slack.  The radios should be OK until the battery starts to run low.

I was messing with my vacuum before my latest engine difficulties.  I found that my venturi, which measures physically about 10"x3.5", delivers about 8" vacuum with only a guage hooked up.  It runs about 5" with instruments hooked up.  The instruments I have take around 4-5."  They must have put a big expensive add-on generator on there if it is a 35amp.  If it is a 35 then you will most likely be okay but don't go flying through Class B with all that stuff added in there and then decide to test if it all works with the landing lights turned on.  I know one coupe that has its radios fade when the lights are turned on.
