Adding to John's posting on "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!", I would
agree 
that unless you have a problem with oil pressure, there are more ways to
mess 
up the job than get it right.  Leave the con rods attached to the crank 
unless you know that you have a problem.  

If you insist on further research, go to an auto parts store and get some 
Plastigauge which is used to measure the clearance of plain bearings.
When 
you know what the clearance is, you will know whether to put in new
bearings.

Replacement of main and con rod bearings is common practice in heavy truck

and industrial engines but, it is so much more difficult to replace the
main 
bearings in a Continental C-85  that it is not many try to do it without 
splitting the case.       (For those who are humor impaired, it is not 
possible to replace the main bearings in an airplane engine as we know
them.)
