They are to be checked for elongation, and if none is found they are servicable. As for the rods being numbered, Continental says they have matched pairs by weight, so that the opposing rods (1-2 or 3-4) are within some fairly gross tolerance. Having balanced several small continentals, I can assure you that their tolerance is quite crude, and without regard to the cg of the rod.
