Craig; The oleo portion of the Coupe/Alon/or in your case, M-10 works to
cushion the initial landing shock. The rest of the time, during taxi and
parking, the cushion effect is provide by the Belleville Springs. I have
run
into the problem of the Belleville Springs coming apart, which causes them
to
not function properly. They can hold the strut up or down depending on the

failure mode. The original Coupes had large rubber doughnuts which did the

same job.
First, regarding servicing information, call Lee Gauger at Skyport
Services
in Wisconsin. He has service manuals on all the models. What you need is
the
service manual for an Alon which will cover the Belleville Springs. His
number is 800 624 5312 (I think if my memory didn't give up) or 262 534
4233
Ext 207.
In order to service the hydraulic fluid level in the struts, the aircraft
needs to be jacked so the main gear wheel is just off the ground. Then you

remove the lower bolt on the oleo/spring strut, and swing it rearward and
down until you can pull it out to a point where the "O"ring on the bottom
of
the inner tube is just above the servicing port. The servicing port is on
the
rear of the strut and has a spring loaded cap which keeps out the dirt.
Once
the strut is in this position, you fill the tube with hydraulic fluid.
Then
reverse the process to put it back together.
However, it sounds like you need to pull the strut completely apart, which

can be done in the same jacked position I described above. You just remove

the outer tube completely off the inner one. The Belleville Springs are on

the outer tube. When you have it completely off, you should have pressure
generated by the Belleville Springs against the top and bottom fitting. If

not, the springs are worn or possibly coming apart. You can remove the
springs by collapsing the stack using large clamps, and pulling the stack
together until the snap ring, near the top, can be seen in the holes of
the
upper, bell shaped, fitting. Just pry the snap ring out of its grove and
carefully release the pressure on the clamps. Then everything comes off
the
top.
This procedure is also explained in the maintenance manual for the Alon.
Good
Luck!
