The conventional wisdom is to begin using a ashless dispersant oil such as
Aeroshell 80 or 100 once oil consumption has stabilized. Ask your mechanic
or engine rebuilder about this. Ashless dispersant oil does have a
cleansing
effect that straight mineral oil does not have. I use Aeroshell 80 (40 wt)
as recommended by the owners handbook and it seems to do fine. Shell Oil
Company put out a video on oil which is excellent and explains how oil
works, etc. If you can find a copy it is worthwhile viewing.

I also use TCP since I purchased my Coupe in 1996 and so far I have had no
valve stem problems or fouling problems. It does seem to work well and is
FAA approved. Embry and Riddle did a study with their fleet of C172s over
a
10,000 hour period and found that it did reduce sludge and deposits and
maintenance costs.

There have been no studies on Marvel Mystery Oil that I am aware of. From
what I have read it does not seem to harm the engine when added to the
oil,
but I do not use it. However, keep in mind it is not an FAA approved
substance for aircraft engines. I am sure you will find a lot of people
who
swear by it but I am not one to add stuff to my oil unless there is some
solid scientific evidence (other than random testimonials) that the stuff
really does some good.

I recommend obtaining a copy of a copy of "Fuel & Oil Systems" from the
publishers of Light Plane Maintenance Magazine. The subject of TCP and
Marvel Mystery Oil is discussed in depth there.
