Wayne, I should have added that the Ercoupe Memorandum #56, December,
1948, 
describes how to check for play.......and that one should be careful not
to 
stretch the systems in checking for play. 

Para 2 ----"--- In checking motion, care should be taken not to exert 
sufficient force to deflect some of the members and therby getting a false

reading. The pressure of the little finger of one hand applied at the 
trailing edge of the aileron is sufficient to take up all of the slack."

The limits listed are:

Ailerons - 7/16" max.  ( with aileron weights installed)
Elevator - 3/8" max
Rudders - 1/4" max

It also points out the necessity to check for play due to worn hinges.
