I understand how IMAP and SMTP work but while IMAP, the protocol, has nothing to do with creating accounts, an IMAP server most certainly should be able to check some repository of account information, which Courier-IMAP obviously does. My packaging system installed it for me as a dependency of the IMAP server. I was able to get it set up and running fine once after reading your note. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm not trying to be ungrateful or anything, but wouldn't it be simpler to just say "Courier-IMAP uses couier-authlib for authentication, use it for setting up accounts that Courier-IMAP can access"? Maybe I'm just a little overly sensitive after other messages I have received on this list but it seems to me that your response was more geared towards making me look ignorant than it was to help me. Anyway sorry for biting the hand that feeds me, your post was indeed very helpful but the tone seemed so insulting and this list has been more hostile towards new people (me) than I have ever seen. My apologies to the list in general if this is not the norm.
