problem is: if someone deletes a message (or moves it to another directory), the message vanishes from his thunderbird mail client (or is moved - so far so good), but the actual file remains on the mail server thus creating a increasing number of files in the shared directory "cur" directory. is this behavior by design? i.e. how can i avoid this?

You're using the wrong kind of shared folders. Use virtual shared folders instead of filesystem permission-based shared folders.
