My 'inbox' for the imap account has always been three > seperate folders in ~/Maildir, cur, new and tmp which I believe are correct or > not? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further? The ultimate troubleshooter is to set IMAPDEBUGFILE=debug.txt in the config file, that creates debug.txt in each Maildir that logs all IMAP commands sent to that account. That's going to generate huge log files fairly quickly, so you don't want to leave it set, for long.

Let me make sure I have this right, in my /etc/log.d/conf/services I
edit the imapd.conf file and add this:

# Which logfile group...
LogFile = maillog

IMAPDEBUGFILE=debug.txt

or am I off base somewhere?

Courier-IMAP does not install anything named "imapd.conf" in /etc/log.d/conf/services, or any other directory. If you're using a customized Courier-IMAP package for your distribution that installs some value-added configuration of some kind, you'll need to consult your package's documentation.

I am referring to the configuration file named "imapd" that's installed by Courier-IMAP's installation script. The default location for Courier-IMAP's configuration files is /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc. If you're using a customized package for your distribution that uses a different configuration directory, consult your package's documentation file. This imapd configuration file begins with the following comments:

##VERSION: $Id: imapd.dist.in,v 1.41 2008/06/21 16:01:23 mrsam Exp $
#
# imapd created from imapd.dist by sysconftool
