On Linux one can use the inotify kernel API directly. The original FAM library was a cross-platform way to implement this functionality, using inotify on Linux and equivalent APIs on other platforms, namely kqueue on BSD as I recall.
Gamin was a Linux-only replacement for FAM, that implemented just the inotify API on Linux. At some point the Linux inotify API was implemented on BSD, I don't know at which point.
