I'm the maintainer of the FreeBSD port, the one who sent the second
message you link.
I was planning to write to this mailing list about this, but did not get
around to it, so I'm "piggy backing" on your message.
As described in that thread, an issue started appearing as soon as
libunistring was upgraded to 1.3 in FreeBSD and downgrading it to 1.2
makes it work again.
I've been unable to discover if there is a bug in libunistring or
courier-imap is doing something incorrect and the update exposes it.
Looks like there is something strange going on with the stat() call, and
maybe libunistring is shadowing the base system one?
