i figured it out, but just for the archives (and sorry in advance for
the extra message).....

i assumed you had to quote the string in the pine config, but that
seemed to break it.  however the following seems to work:

ssh-command=%s %s -q -l %s exec /etc/r%sd 2> /dev/null Maildir

this probably won't work if your shell on the mail machine is csh or
tcsh tho....
