If we knew how to repair it, we would know exactly what your problem is and maybe able to help..
However at a guess, i believe RH 7.1 was the first release where default firewalling is on.
I'm talking about the default setup for sendmail, that doesn't allow POP3 login....with RH Linux 7.1.
Details of the workaround are at http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/gotchas/7.1/gotchas-71.html. It tells me that "sendmail-cf" must be installed....but doesn't tell me how to figure out whether or not it is, or how to install the package, if it's not already installed. There is a directory on the system named "sendmail-cf", which contains a bunch of config files....but I don't know anything more about it than that. I'm not all that experienced with Linux, I'm connecting through SSH to the server, as root. But I've done everything in the docs to try and remove whatever blockage is killing POP login....with no results.
You may wish to look at ipchains. ipchains -L -v will show if firewall rules are on. ipchains -F will remove all firewall rules. There will also be an ipchains init file you may wish to look at..

By ACCEPT, I'm guessing it's supposed to accept logins. I get the error "Connection Refused" when I try logging in by POP3 using Eudora.
hopefully you'll get it working and you can move away from aol.
I have my own mail server running on Windows 2k(until I get this working)....but for some reason the list server didn't like it (I got a mail-deamon message saying "cannot route to [EMAIL PROTECTED]" from the list server), so I had to use my AOL account.....which wasn't my first choice.
Anyway....like I said before. If I can install courier over the original sendmail and get rid of the problem....that's the plan. But I'd like to know if anyone has had this problem, that can tell a little something about it....before I sink time into installing courier, and not being able to use it.
