The default esmtpd file does _not_ turn on authentication. You have to
edit 2 lines to enable it. Check the file, and look for the AUTHMODULES
and ESMTPAUTH variables. There are comments there to help you set
them. And if you also want to force authentication, then make sure to
set AUTH_REQUIRED to 1.
