People would be more likely to read your mail if it weren't full of HTML 
garbage and Microsoft Binary Goo[tm], and the paragraphs were properly 
wrapped at 80 characters, or less, per line.

This tells me that there's something seriously screwed up on your server.  
Under normal circumstances the distributed tarball's makefile rule never 
kicks in.  The possibilities are: 

* A screwed up system clock, that runs behind or ahead by a couple of years. 

* You accidentally touched some of the configuration files or the makefiles.
