Use both. Force MS Outlook to use SMTP over SSL, with plaintext
authentication. And, Mac OS X can use plaintext SMTP, with CRAM-MD5
authentication.

Well, in 0.39 there's also going to be a hack that sends mail via IMAP, but
that's another story...
