Not related to problem, but check ownership of directories created by
maildirmake. They are probably owned by root rather than vmail.

Up until recently, there was a problem with pop3login.c. When you telnet
to port 110, your client sends every command terminated with "\r\n". The
code that "tokenised" the lines did so by breaking at the "\n" sending,
for example, the password with the attached "\r". This could never match.
It was fixed in courier-imap-1.5.3.20021014.RC2.
