I had the same exact problem. People on the list didn't have any comments on this
subject so this behaviour is propably quite rare. As far as I can tell, my problems
were caused by a bad libvpopmail.a.

This is how I finally got it working on RedHat 7.3 (I'm using MySQL -- if you don't,
then drop the "--enable-mysql=y" from vpopmail configuration and propably the
"LDFLAGS" stuff from courier configuration, too):

vpopmail-5.3.9:

# ./configure  --enable-learn-passwords=y \
> --enable-clear-passwd=y --enable-mysql=y \
> --enable-roaming-users=y --enable-file-sync=y

# chmod 644 /home/vpopmail/lib/libvpopmail.a

Needs to be done since courier-imap should be compiled as a regular user and
libvpopmail.a is 600 by default.

courier-imap-1.5.3:

$ LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient -lz"
$ export LDFLAGS
$ ./configure  --with-authvchkpw

Hope this works for you.

Subject: [courier-users] Courier - IMAP Daemon

Dear all,
I am running courier-imap-1.5.3.20020921 down here, together with
Vpopmail-5.2.1
Weirdly, sometimes my users cannot login through IMAP, the error says wrong
password, but if the users use pop3, they always able to log in.
This trouble settled temporary if i restarted authdaemond.plain, so i must add
one command to restarted autthdaemond.plain every 5 minutes to crontab.
