This maildrop error means that it can't properly write to the program specified in xfilter. When you run maildrop as a system user it runs fine, so obviously that system user can pipe the message through spamc. Is there some reason why this user would NOT be able to pipe a message to spamc using xfilter? Try becoming that user (su) and then run maildrop manually again and see what it shows you.
