What do you suggest I look for?

I've readjusted the settings for module.esmtp and that has
helped improve the rate of delivery... but I get these
numbers (for outgoing delivery) by simply doing a grep:

grep "success: delivered" /var/log/maillog | grep -c
courieresmtp

For a one hour's period.

Is there any way to slow down the rate of incoming messages
while increasing the rate of outgoing messages?

Ricardo
