Courier can be a real bitch to set up. Once it is working, it runs very well. But getting all the little pieces in place can be painful. Maybe this is just because I don't have to set it up all that often, so I don't learn how to work through things well.
1. rpmbuild -ta courier-0.44.whatever.tar.bz2. 2. Make some cereal or have a doughnut. 3. rpm -Uvh courier*.rpm 4. Profit

Of course there are those nuances of tweaking it to your needs, but out of the box it runs quite well. I've found the messages in /var/log/maillog are quite descriptive and can always be used as google fodder for searches.
The biggest problem I ever had with courier wasn't actually with courier. It was the hotmail RSET 'feature'. I searched the courier man page for RSET and found esmtptimeoutkeepalive and esmtptimeoutkeepaliveping which aided me in solving that problem.
