A trivial example: I suspect most of us have, at one time or another, used the "telnet smtphost 25" facility to see if the SMTP server is alive (and that we haven't got firewalls/filters/whatever blocking us)... In my case, the issue I was trying to address was "how do I speak IMAPS on port 993" manually, so I can blame Outlook...
