Gordon Messmer scribbled something like: > Clarify. Idiots email my users all the time and messages don't bounce. > Perhaps you can find out exactly why messages are bouncing and > address that issue.
Refer to what Mr. Newall mentioned. Thats basically our problem too. But to clarify more: There appears to be a frequent spam attack towards many hosted domains we have. The spammer takes the domain "blah.com" and then tries to send it the same message but to all sorts of boxes "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" etc. Sometimes these spam attacks are in the form of a dictionary attack towards peoples first names. Anyhow, most of our clients got tired of this kind of spam, so they kindly asked us to turn of their "catch all" email box (that being [EMAIL PROTECTED]). So, efectively, junk spam that leads nowhere is 'bounced'. This is where the problem lies. Since courier tries to kindly tell the sender "no, this user doesnt exist", the sender itself doesnt exist anymore! The return path, the from fields, etc, are just invlaid, so courier sits in a spin on those bugger emails with things like "connection refused" or "connection timed out" because its trying to return the email to a email address whos domain just simply doesnt work anymore or ever at all. Yes, all that stuff about valid MX and valid domain and DNS reverse lookup is all on, thats default for courier. TRULY the one real method I would just LOVE to do... Is for any email sent to our server that doesnt get delivered locally... Gets throw into the /dev/null =) That way, our server would never ever send a return notice for any reason whatsoever... Mwhahahaha.
