I can't seem to get past the configuration script. I am most definitely
NOT used to compiling as a non-root user. Here's the end of the output
of my attempt to configure:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/ --sysconfdir=/etc/ --localstatedir=/var
--with-mailuser=courier --with-mailgroup=courier

. . . (including lots of complaints about various .h files (iostream,
stream, etc).

checking for C++ compiler default output... configure: error: C++
compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for module.local
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for courier

I get crap in config.log about confdefs.h such as:

configure:2639: gcc -c -g -O2 conftest.c >&5
conftest.c:2: parse error before `me'
configure:2642: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| #ifndef __cplusplus
| choke me
| #endif

Any clues? I'm using Debian, and trying to hand-compile because the
Deb-packages aren't working for me.
