I, indeed, have a C++ compiler.  

dpkg --get-selections | grep g++
g++                                             install
g++-2.95                                        install

What else could be going on here?  What else could I look at?  The
directory I am building in is owned by my non-privileged user, and is
set 777 anyway, so there can't be any local perms issues...?
