I've seen the same thing in Thunderbird .8, .9, and 1.0. A "dirty" solution is to quickly click the off-line icon (in the lower-left hand corner) to go off-line and then come back on-line right away. Then when you click on another message in the folder everything comes back.
But it looks like something is wrong in Thunderbird. I need to hunt around some more. I'm sure that will happen in my copious free time! :-)
