I've seen the same thing in Thunderbird .8, .9, and 1.0.  A "dirty"
solution is to quickly click the off-line icon (in the lower-left hand
corner) to go off-line and then come back on-line right away.  Then when
you click on another message in the folder everything comes back.

Check this value:
Edit -> Account Settings -> Server settings -> Advanced -> Maximum number of server connections to cache.


If that value is higher than Courier's MAXPERIP setting, then that may be the problem. Thunderbird used to throw an error in that situation, but perhaps there's been some kind of regression.
