The INSTALL file for courier 0.48.2.x says this:

  Upgrading an existing installation

Upgrading from Courier 0.47 or earlier.

Beginning with 0.48, the authentication library that used to be a
part of Courier's source has been spun off into a standalone
     authentication library.

If the RPM documentation said that courier-0.47 needs a separate
installation of courier-authlib, then the RPM documentation is in error.

Also, you may not realize that the person who told you that courier-0.47
doesn't need courier-authlib (Sam Varshavchik) is the author and sole
maintainer of Courier. He is the one who separated authlib from
the main courier build, and he knows when he did it.

If I were you, and if I had to choose between (#1) Sam Varshavchik and
the Courier INSTALL documentation, versus (#2) some documentation that
comes with an RPM, I would definitely go with #1.

The smtp/esmpt parts of courier-0.47 and the smtp/esmtp parts of postfix
are almost certainly going to conflict with one another.
