I downloaded and installed fam-2.7.0 as recommended by Tony. I uninstalled the previously installed fam rpms.
Downloaded the 2.7.0 source, extracted it to a folder in /usr/local/src/. Did a ./configure and make then make install. Went back to the top of this thread and followed all the instructions. Still no go.
