Only you can answer this question. For your approach to be feasible it must be able to handle external changes to the mailbox's contents. It's not only the IMAP server that can change the contents of the mailbox. Another process can remove messages from the mailbox, or change the flags of existing messages. The IMAP server must be able to handle this situation gracefully, and so will you.
