Any benchmarking of benefits of using indexed headers should also factor in the performance hit of all other, typical, non-searching IMAP operations. It's a no-brainer that indexing messages, in advance, will benefit searching operations.

The question is whether the benefits of indexed searches overcome the overhead and the performance hit you have to take during all other non search-related operation.
