One of the ways I've found really helpful for understanding how things like this work is to use courier's "webadmin" program and see what changes it makes. You can enable the different aspects of SPF in the webadmin and see what changes it makes to the bofh file. You can get all the same information from the docs, but I find it helpful to see what lines get added and deleted as I enable and disable the options in the webadmin program.
