Don't get me wrong: I'm not criticiscing the fact of your grumble, merely noting that the field *is* complex, and (as you remarked) it evolves. As an example, look at the conversation about backup 'MX' mail servers; in the pre-spam days, a second (and third, etc) mail receiver makes sense, especially in the context of less reliable connections and non-internet-type mail paths.
