One step at a time.

Right, but...
First, set up the server to use Postgres. This involves nothing more
than
creating a table, populating its field, then defining the table's
fields in
authpgsqlrc.

I was not able to get this running

Why? What happened?

Right, but I have a Debian standard installation and can not get it to work.

The statement "Can not get it to work" doesn't really contain anything which might allow someone to help you.

If you were to provide more details, such as -- but not limited to -- what settings you've put in your configuration files, what your database table looks like, what happens when you try to log in, what gets logged to syslog -- as well as taking some rudimentary troubleshooting steps that you can do all by yourself, just by reading the comments in the various configuration files, such as setting DEBUG_LOGIN in authdaemonrc, as described in the embedded comments -- I'm confident that someone will be able to point you in the right direction.
