In the virtual account setup we use at $orkplace, a typical userdb
entry does NOT specify the mail variable.

That is, it could typically look like this:

username   
uid=1337|gid=1337|home=/mail/u/username|shell=/bin/nologin|systempw=$1$vAbGRnb3$uQZZPk48qH4GtXMF5rxfd.|gecos=username
1337=   username

There are no entries in /etc/passwd etc. for the username.
