Here's an example sending via one vhost to another (xxxx.com -> xxxx.net)
on the same server and this proves that authentication is definitely
working...

Delivered-To: ad...@xxxx.net
Return-Path: <ad...@xxxx.com>
Received: from [xx.xx.132.242] (zz.zzz.com [::ffff:xx.xx.132.242])
  (SSL: TLSv1/SSLv3,256bits,CAMELLIA256-SHA)
  by xxxx.com with ESMTPS; Mon, 23 Apr 2012 02:13:47 -0700
  id 0000000000023701.000000004F951D4C.00000467
Message-ID: <4f952848.1070...@xxxx.com>
Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2012 20:00:40 +1000
From: XXXX COM <ad...@xxxx.com>
To: XXXX NET <ad...@xxxx.net>
Subject: Vhost Test

When I repeat this from the same MUA account through the same outgoing
mailserver (xxxx.com) to any offsite address then I get the dreaded...

Apr 23 02:14:32 u1 courieresmtpd: error,relay=::ffff:xx.xx.132.242,
 from=<ad...@xxxx.com>,to=<ma...@renta.net>: 513 Relaying denied.

You need to authenticate, or have the sending IP address have RELAYCLIENT set.
